CCAR Has A New Portable Repeater

Thanks goes to Jeff DePolo, WN3A, who has reworked our old Motorola GR300 cross-band ("north-link") hardware into a proper in-band 70cm full-duplex low-power portable repeater. This will be a valuable asset for CCAR in many field operations.

The repeater is running this weekend for testing from the RACES room at the GSC in West Chester, using a gain antenna on the roof. Please make an effort to program your 440 radios and give it a test before Sunday evening. I would like to get a modest idea of what we can expect from it in range and performance. Details for programming are below.

Net Protocol and Message Handling by WB3GCK

Craig LaBarge WB3GCK presented a fine review of emergency voice net protocol and formal message handling at the Tech Rally last Saturday. If you missed the presentation and table-top exercise, his PowerPoint slides are attached for you to download and review.

Good stuff, Craig!

Northbrook Canoe Challenge for Cerebral Palsy - May 3

As time is getting near to this event, we still need at least one more operator. Please consider volunteering to come out for this fun and relaxing Spring event. FYI, background information on the Northbrook Canoe Challenge (for participants) is at http://www.ccdisability.org/nb2009.cfm.

This event is a FM simplex exercise in tough terrain, and we use the UHF FM system as a backup. We might be using CCAR's new 2M portable repeater if it's ready in time. The best equipment to use is a 20+ watt 2M FM or dual-band rig and a roll-up j-pole antenna with coax and carpenter's nylon line to reach 20+ feet into a nearby tree or use a portable mast. It needs to have sufficient 12V power for use over about four+ hours. We also may coordinate cross-band repeaters in parked vehicles for use with HTs. Operators will be at stations along the 9.5-mile river course to provide safety and communications for canoe mishaps (and they do happen!)

Participating so far are: KB3FCJ, W3XE, K3JSE, KB3PCY, KB3MJD, W3AHR, W3HOA, WB3GCK, W3QA, KB3OGL and KB3TQS. Any volunteers? There is no better way to soak in the May air than to help out the Cerebral Palsy Association of Chester County and exercise your emergency radio abilities! Please reply if you can spend this afternoon with us on the River.

Thanks and 73,

Lor W3QA

CCAR Members Earn ARECC Certificates

Last Saturday's Level I Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Course review session and exam session was a success for all who attended! Not one attendee walked away from the room without having achieved at least one ARECC certificate.

Congratulations to Chris Cartwright N3XRV, and Jon Blatman N3VZG, who passed both Level I and Level II examinations! And congratulations to Jon Anderson KB3OLG, Alex Bodnar K3CIM, Scott Pilotti KB3RBU, Paul Dugan KB3MIN and Al McCrae KA3ODI for earning their Level I certificates.

Watch this space for an announcement of the next scheduled test session, anticipated for late summer/early fall. Meanwhile, the ARRL online course is another great way to earn your certificate. See http://www.arrl.org/cep/ for more information.

Complete information on CCAR training is at http://www.w3eoc.org/training.
